�ַ��ϲ� kicks off first-ever Innovation and Entrepreneurship classes

�ַ��ϲ� (�ַ��ϲ�) has officially begun its first round of classes for the highly anticipated Philip S. Mullin Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program. This program offers students a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in solving real-world business challenges.

“This program has the potential to be exactly what we teach: innovation and revolution,” says Sarah Spitsen, program director.

Spitsen brings a wealth of entrepreneurial expertise to �ַ��ϲ�. “I’ve always been passionate about solving problems and building things. Training yourself to know that ‘there’s always a way’ is the foundation of any innovator or entrepreneur. That mentality can transform any situation and has the power to disrupt entire industries,” she says.

Students in the program are learning key concepts like design thinking and problem-solving. The classes provide hands-on experience through projects with local businesses, culminating in a pitch-style presentation for their final. “Students will leave with tangible experiences that enhance their resumes and prepare them to make a meaningful impact in any industry,” Spitsen adds.

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship program has several focus areas, including science and technology disruption, sustainability and the environment, creative design and the arts, policy and justice, business, marketing, and sports. “What makes this program unique is its interdisciplinary nature. We’re not just teaching entrepreneurship—we’re equipping students with the skills to create lasting change in any field,” Spitsen explains.

She says that this approach helps students understand how society is rapidly changing. “We are living in an age where access to technology, resources, and knowledge is growing at an incredible rate—and it will only continue to accelerate. Those with critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and an innovative mindset will be better equipped to excel in this environment.”

Two show-stopping summer experiences help Engel define opera career

�ַ��ϲ� senior Shannon Engel has found herself in two very different worlds over the past two summers—bustling New York City and the quiet, charming town of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

The vocal music education major from Ames, Neb., says these contrasting experiences have shaped her future career and refined her passion for opera. “I have gained so much in two summers,” she says. “�ַ��ϲ� prepared me for these opportunities, and I have new confidence in myself and my abilities.”

As an opera apprentice at the Soo Theatre in Michigan, Engel had the unique opportunity to perform in two operas: Mozart's The Magic Flute and Carlisle Floyd's Susannah. These performances were part of a "Young Artist Program," designed to provide pre-professional experience for singers aged 18 to 30. This summer, the Soo Theatre's program brought together eight apprentices, ranging from undergraduate students to those pursuing advanced degrees.

“We had lessons, rehearsals, or coaching almost every day since I arrived, with two or three days off thrown in the mix. It is certainly exhausting, but also extremely rewarding,” she says. “It truly takes a village to put on a show. Whenever you think a performance was perfect, there is always room for improvement. People don't come to a show just to see the character you are playing; they come to see you and the character. I learned not to lose my sense of self when performing.”

While the Soo Theatre apprenticeship involved opera, Engel’s experience studying at New York University in the summer of 2023 focused on art songs and arias—a solo vocal piece.

“I attended workshops on acting through song, vocal diction classes, yoga for singers, and of course, voice lessons and coaching,” she says.

She studied with Harolyn Blackwell, who performed with the Metropolitan Opera and had played the same role Engel brought to the program. “‘Saper Vorreste’ from Un ballo in maschera was a role that Ms. Blackwell herself had performed. She was able to give me excellent advice about performing the aria and what the character Oscar was like,” she says.

Engel says the greatest advantage of studying in the Big Apple is being surrounded by the arts culture. “I was able to attend La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera and three Broadway productions. You don't get to do that every day in Nebraska. I remember feeling like I was a ‘professional in training’ while attending the program.”

After graduating this May from �ַ��ϲ�, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in vocal performance and eventually teach at a public school in Nebraska.

Jeff Christy tabbed as �ַ��ϲ� head baseball coach

�ַ��ϲ� has named Jeff Christy as the twelfth head baseball coach in program history, Dwight Merilatt, director of athletics, announced Tuesday.

“Hiring Jeff Christy as our new head baseball coach has immediately elevated our baseball program at Nebraska Wesleyan,” Merilatt says. “Jeff’s passion for college baseball, his recruiting experience, and leadership skills will greatly enhance our baseball student-athletes. He has a distinguished career in college baseball, and we are excited that he’s bringing hisexperience to �ַ��ϲ�. His leadership will help us transition to our new baseball stadium at theSandhills Global Youth Complex in the spring of 2025.”

Christy joins �ַ��ϲ� from the University of Nebraska, where he served as assistant coach from 2019 to 2023. In this role, he managed all aspects of pitching and catching, assisted with recruiting, and was instrumental in the development of players who achieved notable success, including reaching the MLB.

“It is a passion of mine to develop baseball players on and off the field and help these young men grow to be the individuals they aspire to be,” Christy says. “We will play hard, work to develop a multidimensional team in all facets of the game and be great teammates. Combine these elements with the great education provided at Nebraska Wesleyan, and I believe we can build a successful program.”

Christy’s previous experience includes serving as a Volunteer Assistant Coach at Texas A&M University and as Assistant Coach & Recruiting Coordinator at the University of Central Oklahoma. He has also managed the Derby Twins, a collegiate summer team, and played professional baseball with the Minnesota Twins organization.

The baseball program will transition to its new home at the Sandhills Global Youth Complex in the spring of 2025, featuring a state-of-the-art stadium and full turf field. This new facility will significantly enhance the experience for both players and fans.

Elder Gallery to feature artist Bri Murphy

�ַ��ϲ�’s Elder Gallery will open for the next academic year with the exhibit Dear Helia.

Artist Bri Murphy will present new work that explores themes of gender, childhood, and legacy in the context of an American political landscape.

At the heart of this exhibition is a reckoning—an exploration of the realities of living in the U.S. today, the complexities of evolving identities, and the challenges of relating to the generations that raised us.

Murphy’s work combines digital technologies such as 3D printing with more traditional materials, influenced by their background in ceramics. Their work explores notions of American identity through the deconstruction of its mythologies – from busts of the Founding Fathers to treasured prose such as the Declaration of Independence.

The exhibit is open August 27 through October 13, with an artist reception on October 4.

Geary selected as A-R-C NCAA Woman of the Year Nominee

Former �ַ��ϲ� track & field student-athlete Bre Geary has been selected as one of the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

“Bre checks all the boxes on what it means to be a finalist for this award,” says Derrick McKenzie, �ַ��ϲ� track & field coach. “She puts others before herself while being a servant leader in so many ways.”

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors graduating female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, and service and leadership.

Geary, a sport management major with a minor in business administration, graduated from �ַ��ϲ� in May with a 3.82 GPA after completing an illustrious career with the Prairie Wolves track & field program.

During her senior season, Geary picked up two All-American honors. During the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Geary helped the 4x400 relay team to a ninth-place finish. Her 4x400 relay team placed eighth at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

She is a two-time USTFCCCA Midwest All-Region selection as well as a seven-time all-conference performer. Geary is a four-time letter winner for the Prairie Wolves.

“While her academic success and All-American athletic ability stand out, it's her service, leadership and growth as a young woman that truly shows her character,” says McKenzie. “Bre is a true ambassador of �ַ��ϲ� and our program and should be a role model for all young women looking to be successful as an NCAA and Nebraska Wesleyan student-athlete.”

Geary was a member of the �ַ��ϲ� Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and served as vice president during her junior year. She was one of �ַ��ϲ�’s conference representatives for the A-R-C during her junior and senior years. Geary was selected to attend the 2023 NCAA Division III Immersion Program and the 2024 NCAA Career in Sports Forum.

Geary also served as the event manager at Nebraska Wesleyan for men’s and women’s soccer games and was the head intramurals supervisor. Geary spent time assisting Visit Lincoln and the Nebraska School Activities Association.

The top 30 honorees will be celebrated, and the Woman of the Year will be named at the NCAA Convention in January in Nashville, Tenn.

Earlier this week, the A-R-C nominated her for the Division III Commissioner’s Association (DIIICA) Women’s Sport Student-Athlete of the Year.

Anderson receives NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Nebraska Wesleyan graduate student Gabe Anderson of men's track and field has been awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for the spring 2024 season.

Anderson of Omaha, Neb. graduated in May from �ַ��ϲ� with a 3.76 GPA as a business administration major with minors in accounting and data analytics. He currently has a 3.95 GPA in the Master of Business Administration program at �ַ��ϲ�.

Anderson was an indoor and outdoor NCAA All-American and a national qualifier for the indoor 4x400m and outdoor 4x400m events. He was a part of the American Rivers Conference All-Academic team for the past four years and earned All-Conference honors 10 times throughout his career.

Anderson holds three school records and appears on the �ַ��ϲ� Top 10 charts 12 times. He was a member of the fraternity Phi Kappa Tau (PKT) and provided many hours of volunteer work and service to the community of Lincoln.

�ַ��ϲ� now has 65 athletes who have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. The Prairie Wolves remain in the NCAA top ten for this award. The �ַ��ϲ� track & field and cross-country programs have tallied 34 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships since 2000.

�ַ��ϲ� swimmer to compete in 2024 Paris Olympics

Kayla Hepler (’24) is on the cusp of a dream come true.

She’s set to graduate from �ַ��ϲ� in December 2024 with a degree in early childhood education. Before she finishes her academic career, she will be front and center on the world’s biggest swimming stage: the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“This means the world to me,” says the native of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

She will be swimming in the 50 Meter Freestyle event on Aug. 3. Hepler is one of two swimmers who will represent their home country. The Marshall Islands are a tiny series of Pacific islands and atolls that are roughly halfway between Hawaii and Australia.

Hepler is a four-time letter winner at �ַ��ϲ� and placed third in the 4x100 individual medley relay at the 2024 American Rivers Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. She also competed in five events at the A-R-C championships.

“Qualifying for the Olympics is by far one of the most difficult things to do,” says Kyle Hunt, head coach of �ַ��ϲ� Swimming. “Kayla is a pro. She’s been training for years and knows exactly what she needs to do. She is positive and has been very consistent with her training.”

Hunt says this is also a special moment for the �ַ��ϲ� swimming program. “Every four years our sport becomes one of the most popular sports in the world, and to see Kayla represent her country in the Olympics is one of the reasons why I coach.”

Hepler says the journey to Paris has been a whirlwind because of rigorous training, extensive travel and academics. “I’ve had to travel across the world while trying to complete my studies,” she says. “For example, I went to the Solomon Islands earlier this spring. I’ve been in Florida for my final training before leaving for Paris. I’m nervous and excited for this.”

She says qualifying for the Olympics has been a significant milestone for her. “I come from a family of swimmers, and my sister competed in the 2012 Olympics in London. Since then, it’s been my dream to follow in her footsteps. And, now, I’m almost there.”

Her sister, Annie, recorded a personal best in the London events. Hepler says her sister is like a second coach providing tips for what the experience might be like. “We are very, very close. She was so excited for me, saying how her little sister is going to be able to compete in the Olympics.”

Hepler says her expectations are, “to do well in my event, and to meet and create friendships with other swimmers there. I just want to soak up the experience and have a really good time.”

�ַ��ϲ�, York University forge pathway for Master of Athletic Training degree

A new partnership between �ַ��ϲ� and York University will help students obtain a master’s degree in athletic training more quickly and efficiently.

The articulation agreement signed on Tuesday will provide York University students a streamlined pathway to advance their careers in athletic training through �ַ��ϲ�’s program.

Students will be able complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years. �ַ��ϲ� has been an accredited athletic training program since 2004 and will continue as a master’s program starting in the summer of 2025. The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) requires a Master of Athletic Training (MAT) to be a certified athletic trainer.

“We are extremely excited to partner with York University and create strong relationships between our two institutions,” says Sam Wilson, director of �ַ��ϲ�’s athletic training program. “This is a great opportunity to provide students with exceptional experience and future job opportunities.”

“This collaboration represents our commitment to providing top-tier educational opportunities and meeting the needs of today's workforce in time and cost-efficient ways for our students,” says Shannon Leinen, provost at York University. “By combining the strengths and resources of both institutions, we are confident that this program will equip our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become leaders in the field of athletic training.”

The benefits of this partnership extend beyond academic resources. It will provide cost savings, access to state-of-the-art facilities, hands-on learning opportunities and a network of professional connections.

How IRO transformed May’s student experience

�ַ��ϲ�’s International Relations Organization (IRO) has been instrumental for helping students both international and domestic find their community on campus.

IRO is a student organization that engages students in the global community on campus with cultural presentations, food and game nights.

Brandon May (’24) of Lincoln, Neb. says he’s always been shy, but found connections with people around the world online. “I discovered my love of different cultures, customs, and music many years ago. Interacting with people from different backgrounds solidified my wonder and fascination with the world beyond Lincoln."

May’s college experience began during the COVID-19 pandemic, which made it difficult for him to connect with classmates until he found IRO his second year. “IRO helped me settle and find my place on campus even as a commuter student,” he says. “I have so many good friends now, and many different perspectives that I care about and take into my life.”

He graduated in May with a degree in music education and says IRO has provided him with skills to help his future students. “I will be able to help my students expand their minds and consider different backgrounds. The world is so interconnected and complex, and IRO has made it much less daunting to help others understand that.”

Over three years, May’s involvement with IRO included serving as an I-Pal – a person who helps international students adjust to Lincoln and campus - to four international students and as secretary of the organization. "I initially joined IRO to stay busy, but it grew into something more. The connections I made have been crucial in developing my identity.”

May says IRO is just as instrumental for international students. "IRO provides an essential support system for students from around the world as they embark on new experiences here. It offers a space where people can share different perspectives, something often hard to find unless you actively seek it out."

He hopes other students will embrace these opportunities. "The friendships, possibilities, and perspectives offered by groups like IRO are immense. Embrace the discomfort of stepping into these opportunities, for they can lead to the most wonderful experiences in life."

Hogue earns �ַ��ϲ�’s 40th consecutive NCAA Academic All-American award

�ַ��ϲ� track and field athlete Bella Houge has earned NCAA DIII first-team Academic All-American honors from the College Sports Communicators, the organization announced Tuesday.

Hogue has won back-to-back Academic All-American honors, the latest of which extends �ַ��ϲ�’s All-American streak to 40 consecutive years. �ַ��ϲ� is ranked 12th among all schools in the country regardless of division for Academic All-Americans and fifth among all NCAA Division III schools.

Houge (’24) of Murray, Neb. earned a 4.0 GPA and graduated in May with a communication studies degree. In her final season, she won the American Rivers Conference championship in the indoor 400m and outdoor 200m events and earned two NCAA DIII All-American awards. As a sophomore, she won three national championships in sprinting events.

Hogue's latest accolade brings the total number of CSC Academic All-American awards for �ַ��ϲ�’s women's track and field/cross country programs to 26.

Cassell named Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing

�ַ��ϲ� President Darrin Good has announced that Ryan Cassell will be the University’s next vice president of enrollment management and marketing. He brings 15 years of NCAA Division III enrollment and admission expertise to �ַ��ϲ�.

“Ryan’s experience at two high-quality, NCAA Division III colleges like �ַ��ϲ� will be incredibly vital to us as we work to reach our enrollment goals in undergraduate and graduate programs,” Good says. “He deeply values collaboration across campus and a positive work culture while maintaining a well-designed set of data to guide decision-making.”

In his role, Cassell will be responsible for leading the University’s division of enrollment management including undergraduate and graduate admission, financial aid, public relations and marketing. He will also serve on the President’s Administrative Council.

“I’m excited to collaborate with students, staff, and faculty to build on the strong success for which �ַ��ϲ� is known,” he says. “We have opportunities to introduce �ַ��ϲ� to new groups across the region, nation and world, and to reinforce our commitment to excellence to those already familiar with the University.”

Cassell joins �ַ��ϲ� from Hendrix College, a private, liberal arts institution in Conway, Ark., where he was the Vice President for Enrollment and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid since 2020. He also served on the President’s Senior Leadership Team and collaborated with the Vice President for Communications. He helped develop strategies that enhanced enrollment and financial aid processes and created new ways to engage with prospective students.

Prior to his role at Hendrix College, he spent 11 years at Sewanee: The University of the South. He served in several admission roles including Associate Dean of Admission. Cassell was also the athletic recruitment liaison for coaches of 25 varsity sports.

Cassell will begin his role on July 29.

Former �ַ��ϲ� baseball player tabbed as new complex director

The Sandhills Global Youth Complex selected Joe Fagler (‘01), a former �ַ��ϲ� baseball player, as its inaugural director. The complex will be the future home of �ַ��ϲ�’s baseball and softball programs.

“Joe was chosen from an extensive pool of highly qualified candidates. His lifelong love and engagement with baseball began with his involvement in the Babe Ruth Baseball League in 1992 here in Lincoln,” says Charlie Colón, board chair for the Sandhills Global Youth Complex. “We couldn’t be more excited to have Joe as our complex director.”

Fagler will oversee all complex operations, including facility scheduling for local, regional, and national tournaments, local youth programming, and marketing. He will begin his new role on July 17.

He played four seasons of baseball for �ַ��ϲ� and then held numerous youth coaching positions throughout the city. He is currently an assistant baseball coach at Lincoln Southwest High School.

The complex will have seven turf fields and will be the future home of �ַ��ϲ� baseball and softball once construction wraps up in the spring of 2025. �ַ��ϲ� student-athletes will help provide local youth baseball and softball instruction and programming at the complex.

�ַ��ϲ� grad wants to champion agriculture through politics

�ַ��ϲ� graduate Matt Wishard ('24) is charting an ambitious path from the fields of biology to the political arena.

Wishard, of Elkhorn, Neb., graduated with a degree in biology in May and aspires to create change by merging his scientific background with his passion for agriculture and politics.

"Doing something you enjoy and believe in is key. Farmers and ranchers deserve more recognition and support at a national level, and I want to be a part of that change,” he says.

He developed a unique appreciation for agriculture through family road trips that showcased the state’s rural landscapes. “You're not far from a cornfield or a ranch anywhere in Nebraska or throughout the Midwest,” Wishard says. "I found that sweet spot for me between politics and agriculture.”

Despite his urban upbringing, these experiences fostered a deep respect for the agricultural community and its vital role in the nation’s economy. “Farmers and ranchers are the backbone of America. They have bills to pay and operate on loans, which can make it challenging to have a consistent living,” he says. “My sister married into a ranch family, so that is another aspect of why I feel advocating for the ag community is so vital.”

At �ַ��ϲ�, Wishard conducted research on nematodes and their impact on root systems, aiming to find environmentally friendly ways to combat these pervasive pests. Nematodes, parasitic roundworms, are known to cause extensive damage to crops, costing the agriculture industry over $100 billion annually.

“This research, although some people may not know about it, plays a vital role in not just our lives but the lives of pretty much anyone around the world,” Wishard says.

In addition to his research, Wishard says his involvement in the Theta Chi Fraternity and Student Advisory Senate gave him opportunities to serve his community and be involved in philanthropies. “These types of campus organizations helped me make connections with area leaders and alumni, which further defined my goals and passions.”

Wishard's next steps involve running for office or lobbying.

�ַ��ϲ� student awarded prestigious study abroad scholarship

McKenna Weber (’25) of Lincoln, Neb., has received a study abroad grant from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society across all academic disciplines.

Weber, a modern language studies and political science double major at �ַ��ϲ�, will study in Tarragona, Spain next semester. She is among 125 students nationwide to be honored with this $1,000 award.

Phi Kappa Phi’s selection process for study abroad grants considers academic achievement, campus and community service, the connection of travel to academic and career goals, a personal statement, letters of recommendation, and acceptance into a study abroad program.

These grants help undergraduates gain knowledge and experiences in their academic fields through study abroad programs.

Since it began in 2001, the society has distributed over $1.3 million annually to students and members. It funds graduate and dissertation fellowships, post-baccalaureate development, and grants for various literacy initiatives.

�ַ��ϲ� grad pursues cutting-edge research at Johns Hopkins

Kaitlyn Georgiana (’24) wants to turn personal tragedy into breakthrough stem cell research for expectant mothers and babies.

She will develop technology that could provide a cure for babies who are diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) or brittle bone disease. Brittle bone disease is a rare genetic disorder where bones fracture easily with no obvious cause or injury and is present at birth.

“When I was a CNA, one of my best friends had a stillbirth in her second trimester after her baby had been diagnosed with OI,” says the North Mankato, Minn., native. “It was very, very hard to watch her go through that, but knowing there have been efforts to treat the disease in utero became very inspiring for me.”

Georgiana graduated from �ַ��ϲ� with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and has been accepted into the Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies masters program at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.

She says she and her classmates will lead groundbreaking research to help develop treatments for babies before they are born. “Regenerative and stem cell technology is considered the new frontier for medical treatment and gene therapies," she says. “There is some research that indicates that stem cells can be used to treat OI, which is significant since treatments are extremely limited.”

Georgiana says she will be able to create her own tests and protocols in a state-of-the-art environment at Johns Hopkins. After completing her masters, she says she will work towards her doctorate.

Spanish professor earns �ַ��ϲ�’s Faculty Scholar Award

Assistant Professor of Spanish Manuela Borzone has received �ַ��ϲ�’s Faculty Scholar Award for the 2023-2024 academic year.

“Now in her second year at �ַ��ϲ�, Manuela’s scholarship has been formidable and has received many accolades,” her nominator says.

Borzone’s article on Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges has earned the Helen Delpar Award as the top essay of 2024 in the peer-reviewed journal, The Latin Americanist. Her work has also appeared in the University of Nebraska Press’s 2022 volume, The Comic Book Western: New Perspectives on a Global Genre.

The book won the 2023 Ray and Pat Browne Award for best edited collection in popular and American culture from the Popular Culture Association.

In addition to her teaching, Borzone is working on a book on print culture in Argentina, and contributes to conferences and roundtables for the Modern Languages Association and the Latin American Studies Association.

“I attract student interest by creating courses that include a wide range of materials, of which comics are just one representative example,” Borzone says. “By showing students how scholarly research can be conducted using such materials.”

Sociology major wins Stewart Memorial Award for Courage

Simon Highsmith (’25), a sociology major from Centennial, Co., is the winner of this year’s Dean B. Stewart Award for Courage.

Highsmith has been chosen as the 2024 recipient for their courage in overcoming adversity and determination to finish their degree despite a debilitating medical condition.

Their nominator says that Highsmith has already faced significant challenges in life. As a trans student, Highsmith has spent significant time educating classmates about their identity. In 2022, they contracted COVID-19, which triggered an autoimmune disease causing a physical disability that has made walking difficult. The disease will soon require them to use a wheelchair.

“Simon is energetic, passionate, and fully engaged in educating their professors and classmates on the rights of persons with disabilities,” their nominator says. “I am very proud of Simon and can't wait to see them graduate and become a voice for change.”

Highsmith says that teaching is their passion, and they will fight for their future. “Some people may not understand or interact with disabled individuals,” they say. “It’s been rewarding because helping people understand those with disabilities could one day lead to a better future for everyone in the disabled community.”

The award is named after Dean Stewart (’62) in recognition of his work to reconnect members of Phi Kappa Tau in their post-college lives while he was suffering from a progressively disabling neurological disease.

Exercise science professor named Advisor of the Year

Rachel Maceri, assistant professor of exercise science, has been named �ַ��ϲ�'s Advisor of the Year for 2023-24.

One student nominator says Maceri helped her pass a chemistry course that was required for her degree after she considered dropping the class after the first exam.

She says Maceri connected her to tutoring, study aids and motivational tools. “It was a definitive moment on my journey where I saw I had the potential to be an excellent student,” the student says. “Prof. Maceri gave me a line of sight to what I can endure, helping me to see I can do hard things.” With Maceri's help, the student received an A on the second exam.

Maceri says academic advising is critical to student success at �ַ��ϲ�. “That's why I'm committed to going above and beyond for each of them.”

Maceri was honored with the award at a faculty meeting earlier this month.

Bridging divides and building roads: McLaughlin reflects on White House internship

Kellen McLaughlin ('24) says he recently learned there’s only one way to fix a pothole.

“If there’s a pothole in the ground, there’s not a Democrat or Republican way to fill that pothole. You just fill it.”

McLaughlin learned that quote from a policymaker in the Biden Administration during his White House internship this spring where he helped with the rollout of significant legislative measures.

Through his experience, he was able to earn college credits through the Capitol Hill Internship Program (CHIP), which provides �ַ��ϲ� students with housing in Washington D.C., connections with alumni and other unique academic opportunities.

McLaughlin's role on the infrastructure implementation team could have a big impact for some U.S. residents. “We're talking about building bridges so people can get from point A to point B, or we're talking about getting people access to high-speed internet so they don't have to go to a fast-food restaurant to do their homework,” he says.

McLaughlin’s group operated under the Deputy Chief of Staff's office, which was tasked with implementing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the American Rescue Plan.

He worked closely with policy advisors, communications staff, and other members of the administration. "I saw the full spectrum of policy research, communications rollouts, and project management," he says.

McLaughlin, from Omaha, Neb., recently graduate with degrees in English and political science and a minor in writing and took special interest in government communication. "I learned how to convey the most information in the fewest number of words, which was a new and valuable skill," he says. “In some ways, it was a poetic exercise.”

His office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building provided a constant reminder of his proximity to the nation's highest office. "I had to pinch myself every day, seeing the White House outside my window," he says.

McLaughlin's passion for political science was sparked at a young age, influenced by his politically active parents and witnessing President Barack Obama campaigning in Omaha. Looking ahead, he’s pursuing professional opportunities in politics.

History professor named �ַ��ϲ�'s Prouty award winner

Sandra K. Mathews, PhD, is this year's recipient of the university's top teaching award, the Margaret J. Prouty Faculty Teaching Award.

One nominator says, “She challenges my view of the world and encourages me to seek the truth of history… Mathews also pushes students to take responsibility for their own education and encourages them to be their best.”

Says another, "I tried really, really hard on all the assignments she gave us, and that energy was always reciprocated 100%. I’m a freshman, and having a professor on campus who believed in me made me feel more comfortable on a new campus.”

A third student calls Mathews’ “Gender and the Wild West” course “the most intellectually stimulating experience of my life.”

The award was established in 1994 by Dr. Margaret Prouty, a 1932 graduate of �ַ��ϲ�. The award recognizes and rewards a faculty member for the pursuit of excellence in teaching and for making a distinct difference in the intellectual lives of students.

Nguyen receives Gilman Scholarship to study in South Korea

A �ַ��ϲ� student will study abroad this fall in South Korea after receiving the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

CeCe Nguyen (’25), a psychology major from Lincoln, Neb., will study at Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul as part of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).

“I have an interest in Korean culture, and I also want to explore how culture affects mental health in Asia because I want to work with the Asian population as a psychologist,” she says.

Nguyen is minoring in East Asian studies and sociology-anthropology. She will study Korean language and East Asian history and culture while she’s abroad.

“As a Vietnamese American, I want to experience what it’s like being in Asia since I've never been there. I want to meet other international students and learn about other cultures, too,” she says.

The scholarship program supports students who study or intern abroad to build skills critical to national security and prosperity through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).

Nguyen is the 64th �ַ��ϲ� student selected as a Gilman Scholar since the program began in 2001.

Real estate prices will continue to rise, �ַ��ϲ� research shows

Research from a �ַ��ϲ� senior shows that real estate prices across the state will likely be on the rise for the next several years.

Khang Hoang (’24), a data analytics major from Vietnam, says the trajectory of housing prices have been steadily increasing. “In the last 10 years, housing prices have almost doubled to $238,000 for a single-family home in Nebraska.”

He says that trend will continue through 2030. “I used a specific model to determine what the next five years will look like. The housing price could be about $350,000 by the end of the decade.”

There are several factors that impact the housing market across the state. “More people are moving to Omaha and Lincoln, which has increased demand. Mortgage rates are slowly starting to decline, and unemployment rates are good.”

But, Hoang says, the biggest economic indicator is household income because that helps determine how large of a mortgage someone can afford. “In the last 10 years, median household income has increased from $60,000 to $80,000 (in Nebraska).”

His advice to potential homeowners is buy now. “History shows us that housing prices always go up and they rarely ever decline.”

Balancing baseball and business, Hughes returns to diamond after injury

On the last day of the fall baseball season in 2022, Theo Hughes (’24) thought he’d never again be able to play the sport he loved.

"I tore my ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), which is what holds your elbow together,” he says. “I underwent Tommy John surgery in December with the hopes that one day I would be able to pitch again.”

UCL reconstruction is more commonly known as Tommy John surgery after a Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who tore his UCL in 1974. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it’s one of the most severe injuries a pitcher can sustain.

Hughes began playing high school baseball in Seward, Neb. before earning a starting role at �ַ��ϲ� (�ַ��ϲ�). He transitioned into a supporting role after the injury and rehab process. “Coming out of the bullpen was something that was new to me in college,” he says.

The recovery process can take up to 18 months. But at 14 months post-surgery, the right-hander says he was ready to be back on the diamond. “I picked up my first career save against Grinnell College. Having the opportunity to come in and close was awesome.”

Hughes says the biggest key to recovery was staying active, rehabbing and being with the team. “I'm one of the leaders, and I tried to do as much as I could to stay involved and keep guys motivated.”

He says he worked to balance his recovery and baseball with his studies in order to earn his degree on time. “I had great relationships with professors. They were flexible and helped me meet my goals throughout this process.”

Hughes graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a minor in accounting. He plans to earn a Master of Business Administration at �ַ��ϲ� while playing baseball, with the goal of reclaiming a starting role in one of his last years of eligibility.

“I’ve learned not to take anything for granted. Your baseball career or anything can end like that. It’s important to have a positive mindset every single day and just attack it.”

His goal after baseball is to join his family’s business in Seward upon his father’s retirement.

�ַ��ϲ� Choir and Jazz Choir to hold season finale

The �ַ��ϲ� Choir and Jazz Choir will culminate their 2023-24 season with a concert tour inspired by civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The performance, "Lead Us On to the Light", is influenced by a phrase from King's favorite hymn. �ַ��ϲ�'s Conductor of Choirs Tom Trenney says his arrangement of "We Shall Overcome" and U2's haunting "MLK" will be highlights of the program.

"Though music may not have the power to cure us, we believe that singing from the heart can bring healing," he says. "We experience this often in our choir. There are days when we may not be feeling joy, but we get to sing a song together that reminds us what joy feels like, and that can make a big difference in opening us to a glimpse of light to carry into the day. We hope that our tour program will bring an extra measure of hope to our students and to all those who may hear us along the way."

The home performance will take place on Saturday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. at First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, featuring the chamber choir from Lincoln Southwest High School. It caps off a five-day tour that begins in Salina, Kan. on Sunday, May 5. Other stops include Kirkwood, Mo. on Monday, Memphis, Tenn. on Tuesday, Franklin, Tenn. on Thursday and Manchester, Mo. on Friday.

The program will also feature music by Rosephanye Powell, Moses Hogan, Maurice Duruflé, Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, and Dolly Parton. Nationally celebrated concert pianist, organist, and composer Anne Wilson will serve as accompanist for the tour performances.
